Pastor Jay B. Broadnax Biography 

The Reverend Jay Broadnax

Pastor of Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church, Philadelphia PA

The Reverend Jay Broadnax was born in Boston MA, and grew up in Newton MA.  He graduated from Brown University in Providence RI with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science.  He worked in Information Technology at Polaroid Corporation for 11 years. 

He committed his life to Jesus Christ in 1984, and answered a call to the preaching ministry in 1988.  Since then, he studied at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, and received his Master of Divinity degree in 1998 from Boston University School of Theology.  Rev Broadnax trained for the ministry at St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Cambridge MA where he served from 1984 to 1998 in various capacities including associate minister, trustee, men’s choir director, class leader, and men’s fellowship coordinator.  Rev. Broadnax was ordained as an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (A. M. E.) Church in 1997.  Upon completion of his seminary training, he was appointed in 1998 to serve as the pastor of Bethel A. M. E. Church in Lynn MA.   While at Bethel, he also served the A. M. E. Church as the New England Conference Sons of Allen Ministry Coordinator and the Boston-Hartford District Chairman of Christian Education. 

From 1996 to 2003, Rev. Broadnax was employed as the Assistant Director for The Black Church Capacity Building Program (BCCBP), a program that provides technical assistance for churches in low income communities that do social outreach ministry in Greater Boston.  He then served for two years as the Director of Research at the Emmanuel Gospel Center, a faith-based non profit organization in Boston, MA. 

While in the Boston area, Rev. Broadnax served on the Boards of Directors of the Union Street Corridor Community Development Corporation (CDC) and The Community Minority Cultural Center, both based in Lynn MA, and of Healing Our Land (a Boston faith-based HIV/AIDS organization).  He was also a member of The Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater Boston.

In the spring of 2005, Rev Broadnax was assigned to the pastorate of Mount Pisgah A. M. E. Church in Philadelphia.  In addition to his pastorate, Rev Broadnax serves the A. M. E. church as The 1st Episcopal District’s Director of Christian Education.    He also serves as:

  • The President of The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity
  • A Steering Committee member for The Interdenominational Citywide Crusade for Peace
  • A Member of The Religious Leader’s Council of Philadelphia and Vicinity, a Co-Convener of its Administrative Group, and member of its Zones of Peace initiative steering committee
  • A member of Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. 

Rev. Broadnax has been a featured revivalist for the City Wide Revival of Philadelphia’s Baptist Pastors and Ministers Conference (2009, 2012 and 2013), and has preached The Annual Sermon for the A. M. E. Church’s New England Conference (2002) and Philadelphia Conference (2009).  Rev. Broadnax was also a featured soloist for the Boston-based gospel group Confirmation on their first CD project. 

Since 1990 Rev. Broadnax has been married to Ingrid Rawlins Broadnax.  Ingrid is a development officer for the Salvation Army.   She is also an Organizational Development Consultant, a Dance Minister, a youth leader, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.   They are proud parents of one daughter, Dara Jianna Broadnax
